Catch up with the Coach
Now that the website has gone live and we have a road race coming up this Sunday (6/9/2020) I wanted to catch up with Coach Watts and see what is going on and how she is preparing for her race and find out a little more about what our coach likes to do.
Congratulations on your Website Launch and your Watts Athletics Team.
Thank you, the website has been in the works for a bit now and it is a relief to be able to finally release it to the world. Watts Team is great and very thankful for the team and runners we have in this group. Everyone is running so well with plenty of PB’s during COVID.
Coach Watts, road racing is back (Finally) !! You are running the Gold Coast Running Festival, how are you feeling leading into this race on Sunday?
So excited to get back out on the road circuit with some of the Watts Crew. Will be a fun morning or racing.
What distance are you running?
I will be doing the 10KM this weekend.
You won this event back in 2018, before stepping up to the Half last year. Are you looking for repeat of 2018?
Haha, just hoping to have a good run and enjoy the race atmosphere while trying to stick to my goal pace.
This will be your first road race back since the International Women's Day 10K race back in March where you took the win and amazing 3rd place overall, how do you feel compared to that race?
It has been a very good consistent training block, not having any races on means you do not have the cycle of taper and recovery from races and you can focus more on consistent training. I feel fitter and faster than March.
What is your typical race week look like for you?
Race week is awesome, it is about backing off the mileage, doing the easy runs easy, eating right and drinking plenty of water.
Do you have a favourite race week session you like to do?
I like the shorter speed work sessions, getting the legs turning over. Something like 600s or 800s are my go-to.
We saw you run a 10K Track event, only a few weeks ago and scored yourself a nice PB 36:46! How was that run? What was it like running with Genevieve Gregson?
This was my second 10K track event ever and I was so nervous. Not having any races leading up to this besides a few time trials I was not sure how I would go. The goal was to finish with a time under 37mins. Having Genevieve on course was awesome, she has done so well in all the events she runs, so only been lapped twice was exciting. She is in good form.
Will we see you back on the Track anytime soon?
Yes actually, I will be running the 1500M next weekend (Saturday 12th), I haven’t run a 1500 in a long time so no expectations just to have fun.
Awesome, keep an eye out for Coach Watts at the 1500M event. Let switch it up a bit with quick fire questions.
